Frederick Coffay Yohn
Frederick Coffay Yohn (born February 8, 1875 in Indianapolis , Indiana , † June 5, 1933 in Norwalk , Connecticut ) was an American painter . His pictures mostly have a military connection and often depict scenes at the front.
Live and act
Yohn was the son of the bookseller Albert Brown Yohn and his wife Adelaide (nee Ferguson). Its ancestors are believed to have descended from Danish immigrants who came to Maryland in the late 18th century . He was trained at the Art School of Indianapolis and until 1895 at the Art Students' League in New York by Henry Siddons Mowbray . During his school days he drew 16 portraits for Harper's Periodicals in Indianapolis at a Republican state convention . In 1895 he opened a studio on 23rd Street in New York where he worked with the works of the artists Adolph von Menzel , Daniel Urrabieta Vierge , Alphonse de Neuville , Edwin Austin Abbey and Howard Pyle . He preferred military subjects, creating images of the American War of Independence or the First World War. When he was 23 years old, some of his paintings were shown at the traveling exhibition. His first works included the illustrations for James Barnes (1866–1933) book For King or Country . The Hero of Vincennes published by Lowell Thomas was also illustrated by Yohn. In 1899 he was sent to London by Scribner's Magazine to make 17 drawings for Theodore Roosevelt's Oliver Cromwell . In January 1908 he married the musician Gertrude (nee Klamroth), a daughter of Albert Klamroth from New York with whom he had two sons. They then went to Westport and in 1910 to Silvermine.
In 1929 a 2-cent stamp created by Yohn was published at Fort Sackville, now Vincennes, in Indiana, on the theme of the 150th anniversary of George Rogers Clark's victory over the British.
