Life

The career of Ellery Queen began with a writing contest, one in which definitely pseudonym had to be used. With a flair for marketing, the cousins turned their hero into an author who is his own chronicler .

The fictional Ellery Queen is the son of Inspector Richard Queen, through whose intermediary he often comes to his cases. Furthermore, he has studied and is financially independent through an inheritance . So all in all he is a version of Lord Peter Wimsey trimmed to American standards .

In addition to the Ellery Queen novels, Dannay and Lee wrote the short story Terror at Northfield in 1956 , which was made into a film in 1963 in the series The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and published in German under the title Stadt in Angst .

Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine , later launched , gave authors a platform for first-time publications, which helped some to achieve successful careers. Ellery Queen was also used as a " house name " by others (e.g. Jack Vance , Avram Davidson ).

Under the pseudonym Barnaby Ross, Dannay and Lee published four novels about the detective Drury Lane between 1932 and 1934.
