Frederik Prausnitz

Frederik William Prausnitz (born August 26, 1920 in Cologne ; † November 12, 2004 in Lewes , Delaware , USA ), was a German-American conductor .

Life

Frederik Prausnitz emigrated with his family to the USA in 1937 in order to avoid military service in the Nazi state . He studied from 1941 to 1945 at the Juilliard School and taught there from 1947 to 1961. From 1961 to 1969 he was conductor of the New England Conservatory Orchestra in Boston . He then went to London and conducted leading British orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra .

Back in the US, he was chief conductor of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra from 1971 to 1974 . From 1976 to 1998 he taught at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore , first he was music director of the Peabody Symphony Orchestra until 1980 , then he was director of orchestral conducting until 1998.

In the USA, Prausnitz was particularly committed to contemporary music from Arnold Schönberg to Karlheinz Stockhausen , and also to American composers such as Elliott Carter and Roger Sessions , who dedicated his 9th Symphony to him. He was also a sought-after Mahler interpreter and was awarded the Mahler Medal of Honor by the American Bruckner Society in 1974.

His most important writings include Score and Podium. A Complete Guide to Conducting (1983) and Roger Sessions. A Critical Biography (2002).
