French Lick is a city in French Lick Township , Orange County , Indiana , United States . According to the 2000 census , French Lick had 1,941 residents.
history
French Lick was originally a French trading post. On an 1835 map of the state of Indiana, the parish was previously Salt Spring . French Lick was founded in 1857.
From 1840 the sulphurous springs of the place were used for medical purposes. In the second half of the 19th century, French Lick gained some fame as a seaside resort in the USA. At the beginning of the 20th century, with the emergence of new casinos, some celebrities settled in the city, including gangster Al Capone , composer Irving Berlin and boxer Joe Louis .
The French Lick Resort Casino was the main entertainment venue in the city. It also stayed open when all the other casinos had to close, as the city's heyday was long over. The casino was temporarily closed in 2005 due to extensive renovations.
