Frido (actually Fridolin ) Pflüger SJ (born February 18, 1947 in Albbruck ; † June 20, 2021 in Kampala , Uganda ) was a German Jesuit . He was a teacher, headmaster and from September 2012 to June 2018 head of the German Jesuit refugee service in Berlin . From October 2018 he headed the Jesuit Refugee Service Uganda .

Life

After graduating from high school in Waldshut , he joined the Jesuit order in 1966 and studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Pullach , Innsbruck and Tübingen . From 1971 to 1973 he was an educator and mathematics teacher at the St. Blasien college in the Black Forest. On October 2, 1976 he received in Munich by Bishop Ernst Tewes CO the priesthood . From 1975 to 1981 he completed a second degree in mathematics and physics in Tübingen and was then a teacher of mathematics, physics and astronomy at the Jesuit college in St. Blasien. During his tertiary studies in the Philippines in 1986/87, he lived with refugees for three months in the Bataan refugee camp. From 1988 he was deputy headmaster at the St. Blasien college. From August 1992 he helped to rebuild the Catholic St. Benno-Gymnasium in Dresden , whose headmaster he became in 1994 and stayed until 2003.

From 2003, Pflüger worked for three years for the Jesuit refugee service as a project manager in Adjumani, Uganda , where 90,000 Sudanese refugees arrived and 30,000 children were looked after in the refugee schools . From 2006 to 2008 the Provincial of the German Jesuit Province , Fr. Stefan Dartmann SJ, appointed him as a delegate for Ignatian pedagogy . From 2008 he was regional director of the Jesuit Refugee Service East Africa, which looks after around 110,000 refugees.

In 2012, Pflüger succeeded Father Martin Stark SJ as refugee chaplain in the Archdiocese of Berlin and representative of the Archdiocese in the Berlin Hardship Commission . Pflüger was a member of the Rotary Club Dresden .

Pflüger headed the Jesuit Refugee Service Germany until 2018. He was followed by Father Claus Pfuff SJ. From October 2018, Pflüger was again active in East Africa and headed the Jesuit Refugee Service Uganda.

Frido Pflüger died on June 20, 2021 in Kampala as a result of COVID-19 .
