The Fridolininsel (also Fridolininsel ) is a small Rhine island between the Baden town of Bad Säckingen and the Aargau community of Stein , 190 meters below the wooden bridge Bad Säckingen and 285 meters above the Fridolinsbrücke . The island is 125 meters long and up to 40 meters wide and covers an area of around 0.4 hectares . It is considered a natural monument and cannot be entered by people.

The Fridolin Island emerged from a gravel bank , which was represented in Matthäus Merian's Topographia Alsatiae as early as the middle of the 17th century and named “S. Fridelins Acker ”. Since the border regulation in 1808 it has been on Swiss territory.

In order to improve the flow conditions, the island was relocated around 35 meters to the north in the direction of the German shore during the construction of the Säckingen Rhine power station in 1961. Due to the construction of the power station, the water level on the island sank and it was fortified and planted. The territorial affiliation was then long unclear. In 2013 a new state treaty stipulated that it should belong to Germany in the future.
