Friedrich-Karl "Friedel" wood (born January 21, 1919 1 ; † May 20, 1941 in Crete ) was a German football player .

Career

societies

At the age of 17, Holz moved up to the first team of the Duisburg TSV 1899 and played from 1937 to 1939 (from 1938 - due to merger - for TuS Duisburg 48/99 ) in the Gauliga Niederrhein , one of the first 16, later increased to 23, Gauligen at the time of National Socialism in the German Empire as a uniform top division. Going for goals in this, without having had any significant success or being able to qualify for the final round of the German championship , he had to do his military service and give up playing football early.

National team

Wood played his only international match for the senior national team on March 20, 1938 in Wuppertal in a 2-1 victory over the Luxembourg national team . Sepp Herberger , who was looking for an alternative to Josef Fath from Worms , found a sprinter, a ball artist and a striker with a sharp shot and a sure finish in Holz , when he won 10-0 with a junior selection team against an Oberhausen city selection and - came on after half-time - contributed two goals.

Others

Friedel Holz was killed in the fighting for the Greek island of Crete in World War II and has been missing in the sea around Crete ever since. His name is on a plaque at the German military cemetery in Maleme .
