History and equipment

An altar pledge was donated as early as 1390

"In the chapel consecrated in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the village of Keniken"

The income register of the Amorbach monastery from 1395 mentions this chapel three times. It had no cemetery until 1615, so it was never a parish church. The chapel was described as dilapidated as early as 1549, but it was not until 1615 that the choir and roof ridge were rebuilt. In a fire on March 22, 1597, in which about a third of the village was destroyed, the chapel remained intact, which greatly increased trust in the chapel and its image of Mary. The Pietà was created around 1520 and is still in the chapel today. The building inscription on the south wall reads:

“When Man Zalt 1615 Jar, Disser choir was built. Valentinus Beczolt Gotshaus master. "

Next to the municipal coat of arms, the Kanne, you can see the coat of arms of the then bailiff Caspar Lerch von Dirmstein in Bischofsheim, who was probably involved in the construction on behalf of the elector. At that time the choir received rectangular Renaissance windows. In 1873 a pointed arch window was moved from the nave to the choir for the two sides of the choir. There were also neo-Gothic altars in 1874. During these renovations, Renaissance painting was exposed. On the central window, a multi-part coat of arms with the Mainz wheel and the crown with the iron hat of the von Kronberg family refers to the Archbishop of Mainz and Elector Johann Schweikhard von Kronberg , who ruled from 1604 to 1626. The two crossbars on the left show the coat of arms of the Mainz cathedral chapter, which was entitled to the patronage right . On the right side you can see the coat of arms of Caspar Lerch , who was bailiff from 1611 to 1619. According to Pastor Severus, the cemetery was laid out around 1615/17 and the cemetery wall in 1617. He wrote in his chronicle around 1760:

“The main altar is consecrated in honor of the Sorrowful Mother of God. Under Pastor Seeger, Mr. David Mühling donated a second altar in honor of Jesus, Maria, Joseph; the third altar, on the gospel side, in honor of the crucified Christ is erected by Sebastian Brotzler. With the consent of the heirs, a larger picture of the crucified was brought to the new church for greater ornamentation; it was replaced by a smaller picture, but of some value. "

Even today there are two baroque paintings of the crucified on the rectory. In 1705 an epitaph was also purchased. During a renovation in 1873/74, the chapel received a new gallery with a staircase from the outside and new floor slabs; the choir only received a cross vault at that time . A pointed arch window was broken out of the left side altar and inserted in the choir. The painter Breitenbach delivered three neo-Gothic altars for 547 guilders in October 1874 . The Woerl art dealer in Würzburg bought a new picture of the fourteen helpers for 80 guilders . When it was converted into a morgue in 1970, the three altar structures were placed in the archive of the sculptor Leib in Gerlachsheim . The picture of Joseph's death is in the Rathausspeicher, the baroque figures of the Holy Family have been in the Tauberbischofsheim Museum since 1972 .
