Gottfried Mutschlechner

Gottfried Mutschlechner , called Friedl (born October 14, 1949 in Bruneck , South Tyrol ; † May 10, 1991 at Manaslu , Nepal ), was a professional mountaineer . He had undertaken numerous first and solo ascents in the Dolomites and the Western Alps and climbed some eight-thousanders in the Himalayas . During an unsuccessful expedition to the 8163  m high Manaslu, he was fatally struck by lightning while descending. The South Tyrolean was considered to be Hans Kammerlander's teacher , especially in rock climbing.

Career

In 1979 Mutschlechner successfully passed the mountain guide exam and in the same year accompanied Reinhold Messner on his expedition to K2 ( 8611  m ). Due to the weather conditions, his rope team could not reach the summit. In 1981 and 1982 he managed to climb Shishapangma ( 8027  m ) and Kangchenjunga ( 8586  m ). He failed to climb Cho Oyu ( 8188  m ) in 1982, as did in 1984 on Dhaulagiri ( 8167  m ). He was able to climb Makalu ( 8485  m ) in 1986.
