Friedrich Böhm (born August 15, 1885 in Harburg (Swabia) near Donauwörth , † August 25, 1965 in Munich ) was a German actuary and university professor.

Life

After graduating from high school, Friedrich Böhm studied mathematics at St. Anna High School in Augsburg in Munich . In 1908 he received his doctorate under Ferdinand von Lindemann ( parabolic metrics in hyperbolic space ). Lindemann, who himself had already given lectures on actuarial mathematics in Munich, drew his attention to questions of mortality and disability, and in 1911 made it possible for Böhm to do his habilitation in this subject. Böhm became a private lecturer and founded a seminar for statistics and the insurance industry based on the example of the Göttingen University ( Georg Bohlmann ) . In the winter semester of 1911/12 he began lecturing on actuarial mathematics. He had also passed the state examination as a teacher and was a teacher. In 1920 he became associate professor for actuarial mathematics at the University of Munich, which he taught until his retirement in 1955. He also taught other uses of mathematics in business.

For a long time he remained the only actuary at the University of Munich and was only supported temporarily by the former director of the Hamburger Feuerkasse Paul Riebesell (1883–1950), who was appointed honorary professor in 1938 . Boehm's successor in Munich was Hans Richter , who was appointed professor for mathematical statistics and business mathematics in 1955 .

Böhm's two-volume textbook Insurance Mathematics was widely used .
