Johann Friedrich Franz Burgmüller , also called Frédéric Burgmüller , (born December 4, 1806 in Regensburg , † February 13, 1874 in Beaulieu near Marolles-en-Hurepoix , Essonne ) was a German composer .

Life

Burgmüller came from a musical family. His father Friedrich August Burgmüller worked as a music teacher, composer, conductor and later as music director in Düsseldorf, his mother Therese von Zandt was probably an employee of the Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung, published in Leipzig . His younger brother Norbert Burgmüller was also a composer.

As early as 1807 Burgmüller came to Düsseldorf with his family, where he spent his youth. After his father's death in 1824, he left the city and from then on worked in the Basel , Strasbourg and Mulhouse areas , finally moving to Paris in 1834 . In 1842 he was granted French citizenship.

Works

Friedrich Burgmüller composed almost exclusively works for piano that were easy to play. His piano études for young pianists , which are still valued today ( 25 easy études op. 100 ), deserve special mention .

He also wrote two numbers for the ballet Giselle by Adolphe Adam (1841) and the music for the then extremely popular ballet La Péri (1843) based on a libretto by Théophile Gautier and the choreographer Jean Coralli . The demanding title role was created for Carlotta Grisi , one of the most famous dancers of her time. The scene La Rêve was spectacular , in which Grisi dropped 3 meters from a cloud into the arms of her partner Lucien Petipa .
