Friedrich Heinrich Dieterici (born July 6, 1821 in Berlin , † August 18, 1903 in Berlin) was a German Arabist and Orientalist .

Life

Friedrich Heinrich Dieterici, the son of statistician and political economist Carl Friedrich Dieterici , studied oriental languages, especially Arabic , in Berlin, Halle (with Emil Roediger ) and Leipzig (with Heinrich Leberecht Fleischer ). He completed his habilitation in Berlin in 1846 and then published the book Mutanabbi and Seifuddaula (Leipzig 1847). From November 1847 to the summer of 1849 he traveled to the Orient, namely Egypt, Petrean Arabia (today's Jordan ), and Palestine. A trip to the Nile between November 1848 and January 1849 brought him to Upper Egypt. He also visited Damascus (June 1849) and Beirut ; in Damascus he met the Prussian consul Johann Wetzstein , who had been working there since spring 1849. Dieterici's two-volume travel pictures from the Orient (Berlin 1853) are based on the memories of these journeys and convey a vivid impression of the perception of the Orient and, in particular, of the perception of Egypt and Palestine around the middle of the nineteenth century.

After his return he was appointed associate professor of Arabic literature at the University of Berlin in October 1850. The critical edition of the Alfiyya of Ibn Mālik (d. Approx. 1276 ) , which he was concerned about, constitutes a milestone in Arab research . It appeared with a Latin introduction as Alfijjah, carmen didacticum grammaticum auctore Ibn Mâlik (Leipzig 1851), then also in a translation: Ibn 'Aḳîl's Commentar on Alfijja des Ibn Mâlik (Ferdinand Dümmlers Verlags-Buchhandlung, Berlin 1852). This was followed by Carmina Mutanabbii (Berlin 1858–59) and a Chrestomathie ottomane (Berlin 1854) with grammatical paradigms and a glossary.

Dieterici's later writings were groundbreaking for the study of Arabic-Islamic philosophy, in particular Die Naturanschauung and Natural Philosophy of the Arabs in the 10th Century (Posen 1861; 2nd edition Leipzig 1876); The Propaedeutics of the Arabs (Berlin 1865); The logic and psychology of the Arabs (Leipzig 1868); The anthropology of the Arabs (Leipzig 1871); The Doctrine of the World Soul (Leipzig 1873), finally The Philosophy of the Arabs in the Xth Century AD (2 volumes, Leipzig 1876–79). Dieterici also published the interesting, in many ways forward-looking work, Darwinism in the tenth and nineteenth centuries (Leipzig 1878). The so-called Theology of Aristotle from Arabic manuscripts (published in Leipzig in 1882 and translated in Leipzig in 1883) is one of his last writings . In addition, he wrote smaller papers for the magazine of the Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft .
