Emil Rödiger

Emil Rödiger (born October 13, 1801 in Sangerhausen , † June 15, 1874 in Berlin ) was a German orientalist and Semitist .

Life

After graduating from high school, Rödiger studied theology and oriental studies at the University of Halle from 1821 . After receiving his doctorate in 1826 ( Dr. phil. ), He acquired the academic title Lic. Theol. In 1828 at the theological faculty . with a work in which he denied the origin of the Arabic translation of the historical books of the Old Testament from the Alexandrian one. In 1830 he became associate professor and in 1835 full professor for oriental languages at the University of Halle and from 1860 at the Berlin University . In 1864 he was elected a full member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .

After the death of Wilhelm Gesenius , he completed his Thesaurus Linguae Hebraicae and published the Hebrew Grammar in further editions until 1874. He made important contributions in the field of Semitic palaeography . In addition to books, Rödiger published numerous articles in the journal of the Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft, which has been published since 1847 .

In 1870 Rödiger received a medal together with his colleagues Hermann Brockhaus , August Friedrich Pott and Heinrich Leberecht Fleischer on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft , whose first managing directors had been the honorees.

Rödiger's son was the librarian Johannes Roediger .
