Friedrich Eduard Meyerheim (born January 7, 1808 in Danzig , † January 18, 1879 in Berlin ) was a German painter .

Life

Meyerheim belonged to a family of artists from Danzig. The father Karl Friedrich Meyerheim was a room and decoration painter who also trained him at first.

After initial studies with the architectural painter Johann Adam Breysig in the art school of his native city, Friedrich Eduard Meyerheim came to Berlin in 1830, where he continued his education at the academy run by Johann Gottfried Schadow . Eduard Daege and Johann Gottfried Niedlich were his teachers. After completing his studies, Meyerheim wandered through the Margraviate of Brandenburg with his friend, who later became head building officer Heinrich Strack , and made numerous architectural drawings, in particular of churches and brick buildings. Consul Wagener acquired his first independent painting, the Schützenfest of Westphalian farmers (also called Der Schützenkönig ), from 1836 , from whose estate it came into the collection of the National Gallery in Berlin .

Under the influence of the Düsseldorf School of Painting, he painted a number of romantic genre pictures between 1833 and 1841 . From then on he devoted himself exclusively to depicting bourgeois and peasant life. In the meantime he had already taken some motifs from this, for example in the picture The Schützenkönig from 1836. Westphalia, Altenburg, Thuringia, Hesse and the Harz were his preferred fields of study. His genre pictures are characterized by an enamel-like coloring. In 1836 he married the sister of the Berlin sculptor Friedrich Drake . Since 1870 a severe nervous disease paralyzed his artistic activity.

The son Paul Meyerheim portrayed his father in a masterful painting in 1877, which ended up in the Museum of the City of Danzig.

Friedrich Eduard Meyerheim died in Berlin in 1878 at the age of 71 and was buried in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery in Schöneberg . The grave has not been preserved.

On January 20, 2019, an episode of the NDR's Lieb & Teuer program was broadcast, moderated by Janin Ullmann and filmed in Reinbek Castle . In it, 21 sketches by Meyerheim were discussed with painting expert Barbara Guarnieri.
