Johann Ludwig Friedrich Glück (born September 23, 1793 in Oberensingen , † October 1, 1840 in Schornbach ) was a German pastor and composer .

Friedrich Glück was born in Oberensingen (today a district of Nürtingen ) as the son of the local pastor Jakob Johann Glück. He attended the monastery school in Maulbronn and from 1809 to 1813 the Tübingen monastery . Glück discovered his love for music in the monastery. Together with three friends he formed a vocal quartet, for which Glück usually wrote the melodies himself. After completing their studies, the four friends went on a trip to Italy, they wanted to earn the costs with song recitals.

Famous works

For this trip Glück wrote the folksong, which later became widely known and especially popular in Switzerland, “ Heart, my heart, why so sad? - the Swiss homesick ". The four friends celebrated great successes on their trip to Italy.

In 1814 he discovered the text to Eichendorff's "Mühlenlied" in Kerner's "Deutscher Dichterwald" (German Poet Forest), an almanac from the year 1813, which was simply headed with "Lied". Glück composed the music for this text, the now world-famous and popular folk song In a cool bottom was created . Glück achieved a third major success in European fame with the ballad Bertrand's Farewell . With this ballad he also became famous in France.

Career history

After completing his vicariate in 1818, Friedrich Glück worked as a pastor in Aichtal -Neuenhaus, in 1825 he became a garrison pastor on the Hohenasperg , then in 1829 a pastor in Schornbach (today a district of Schorndorf ). Glück died in his rectory in Schornbach in 1840.

A Friedrich Glück memorial with a documentary exhibition on the life and work of the poet and composer was later set up in the entrance hall of this rectory . The city of Nürtingen has named a primary school and a street after Friedrich Glück in the Oberensingen district .
