Friedrich Handtke

Friedrich Handtke (born December 7, 1815 in Pförten , † January 25, 1879 in Glogau ) was a German cartographer of the 19th century.

After training as a surveyor and a year as a volunteer in the Prussian army, Handtke worked from 1838 as head of the cartographic department at the Carl Flemming publishing house in Glogau. There were 260 maps published by 1874, 168 of which Friedrich Handtke drew himself. His most important work is the "Hand Atlas of the Prussian State" from 1846 with 36 maps: In addition to the "Overview Map of the Prussian State" and the "Map of Neuchâtel and Valendis" followed the nine provinces, namely East Prussia , West Prussia , Pomerania , Posen , Silesia , Brandenburg , Saxony , Westphalia and the Rhine Province and the 25 administrative districts. One of his students was Paul Thumann .
