Friedrich Horschelt (painter)

Friedrich Horschelt (born November 22, 1824 in Munich ; † July 27, 1881 there ) was a German portrait painter .

Life

Horschelt was the son of the ballet master Friedrich Horschelt and his wife the dancer Barbara (née Eckner, 1804–1888), who was also called Babette and who had performed as a soloist in the Munich Ballet from 1820 to 1830. He received his first drawing lessons from the painter Michael Echter in Munich. From 1841 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 1847/48 he was a student of Charles Gleyre in Paris. Horschelt turned to portraiture and took part in the Paris Salon in 1848 . From 1848 he returned to Munich, where he worked as a portrait painter. He went to Vienna in 1854 (with letters of recommendation from the former Bavarian King Ludwig I to Archduchess Hildegard ) and was then in Pest . He returned to Munich before 1863. The painter Theodor Horschelt was his younger brother.
