Friedrich Karl Castelhun

Friedrich Karl Castelhun (born February 27, 1828 in Nordheim near Worms , † November 1, 1905 in San Francisco , California ) was a German-American doctor and poet .

Life

Friedrich Karl Castelhun was born in 1828 as the son of Johann Georg Castelhun in Nordheim near Worms. He graduated from high school in Bensheim an der Bergstrasse. At the end of 1846 the family emigrated to America, Illinois . He studied medicine and became a doctor like his father in Cleveland, Ohio and Ann Arbor, Michigan . He deepened his scientific training through stays in Würzburg , Berlin , Vienna and Prague in 1864 and 1865. After his return to the United States, he settled as a practicing doctor in St. Louis, Missourilow. In 1875 he moved to his siblings in San Francisco, where he practiced for two years, but after the tragic death of his son he returned to St. Louis.

In addition to his work as a doctor, Castelhun was very committed to his mother tongue, German, in his new home during his lifetime. He published several volumes of poetry in the German language and his essays and poems were featured in numerous monthly and specialist magazines.

Friedrich Karl Castelhun died in November 1905 at the age of 77 in San Francisco, California.

His children were: Frederick Carl Castelhun Jr. (1867–1940), Ella Castelhun (1868–1961), Rudolph Castelhun (1870–1877), Maida Castelhun (1872–1940), Ernest Castelhun (1875–1937), Paul Roetter Castelhun (1878–1969), Johannes Erwin Castelhun (1880–1969) and Walter Castelhun (1889–1919).
