Friedrich Colonna von Fels

Friedrich Kaspar Colonna Freiherr von Fels (also Vels and Völs ), lord of Schenkenberg and Engelsburg auf Neudek and Gabhorn (* around 1575 - † April 2, 1614 in Gabhorn ) was a Bohemian nobleman, landowner and royal Brixen chamberlain.

Life

He was the son of Jakob Caspar Colonna Freiherr von Fels and Schenkenberg, Lord of Gabhorn and Engelhaus (1525–1610) and his wife Anna Caroline, née Countess Schlick (1535–1590), the sister of Count Christoph Schlick on Neudek. The family who converted to Protestantism can be traced back to around 1572 in Bohemia and originally came from the Tyrolean Völs . They were a branch of the Roman Colonnas and immigrated to Tyrol around 1153. His older brother was the military leader Leonhard Colonna von Fels who enlarged the inherited family property in 1609 by purchasing the neighboring Buchau-Hartenstein rulership.

On November 23, 1600 he married Anna Barbara von Schönburg (1583-1625), the daughter of Wolf III. von Schönburg-Glauchau and Waldenburg (1556–1612) from the house of Schönburg . On February 22, 1602, he bought the Neudek estate from his cousin Stephan Schlick for a purchase price of 69,000 Schock Meissner groschen and since then has largely taken up residence at Neudek Castle or his Gabhorn estate. The zealous Lutheran promoted the Reformation in his territory and provided the local church community exclusively with Protestant pastors. Friedrich Kaspar Colonna von Fels died before the outbreak of the Thirty Years War on April 2, 1614 on Gabhorn at the age of about 39 and was buried in a crypt on April 30 of that year in the parish church of St. Martin in Neudek. Pastor Valentin Löwe from Adorf gave the funeral sermon for him . It was given for printing in Leipzig in 1614.

After his death, his widow Anna Barbara ruled Neudek, Gabhorn and other estates for their underage son Wolf Caspar. After the battle of the White Mountain , his sons Johann Georg, Wilhelm and Wolf Leonhard were deprived of their family property and the family was expelled from Bohemia. His son Johann Georg was seriously wounded in the battle of Lützen and died in Naumburg a few days later. His son-in-law was Field Marshal Johann Philipp Cratz von Scharffenstein , who was in Swedish service and beheaded in Vienna in 1635. His descendants include almost all European royal families, including the last German emperor from the Hohenzollern family.
