Friedrich Knop

Friedrich Knop (born January 26, 1958 in Hanover ) is a German mathematician and professor of algebra and geometry at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). He mainly deals with algebraic groups and representation theory .

Knop graduated from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in 1982 as a graduate mathematician. In 1987 he received his doctorate with Hanspeter Kraft at the University of Basel with the thesis A new connection between simple groups and simple singularities . Three years later he also completed his habilitation in Basel. From 1992 he worked first as an associate professor and then, from 1995, as a full professor at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, USA. Since 2007 he has been a full professor of mathematics at FAU.

He has been a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 2018 .
