He rejected the onslaught of superior French forces on the artillery position and, at his own initiative, went over to counterattack. With personal bravery and prudence, he led his men forward, forced the enemy to retreat, captured numerous French in pursuit and captured an enemy battery. Due to a lack of means of transport, he could no longer use the success. The company suffered "relatively very small losses". For his services in front of Orleans he was awarded the Iron Cross II. With the Most High Sigant of July 5, 1871, as well as an army order of July 16, 1871, he was named a Knight of the Military Max Joseph Order because of his brave behavior in the battle near Lemons. Associated with this was the elevation into the personal nobility by King Ludwig II and he was allowed to call himself Ritter von Krieger after being entered in the nobility register .

On November 27, 1876, he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant in the 1st Infantry Regiment "König" . On July 9, 1877, he saved a boy from drowning, for which he was given the highest recognition according to the royal signature of August 16, 1877.
