Friedrich Leithe (born March 28, 1828 in Fieberbrunn , † December 15, 1896 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian librarian .

Life

Friedrich Leithe was born as the son of a kk Gubernialrat and ironworks director. He attended middle school and studied law at the University of Vienna . 1852 doctorate he became Dr. phil. Just one year later he got a job as a laborer at the Vienna court library .

In February 1857 Leithe Amanuensis was appointed scriptor at the University Library in Vienna in April of the same year . His superiors noticed him because of his special expertise and hard work and received a ministerial commendation. In January 1868 he was given a position as a librarian at the Innsbruck University Library and at the same time the director of the library was transferred, whereby he skipped the position of curator. In 1873 he was one of the members of the Tyrolean State Commission for the Vienna World Exhibition . In the same year he submitted library instructions to the Ministry for Cultus and Education , his superior authority, which, although never officially introduced, later became de facto binding for libraries throughout Austria.

In 1874 Leithe took over the management of the Vienna University Library. He carried out the correspondence himself, bought the books and did some of the cataloging. In 1877 his work The Imperial and Royal University Library appeared in Vienna , which attracted attention through extensive source studies. When the university library was relocated to the newly built university instead of having its own building, he resigned from his position. But just one year later, in 1885, Leithe became director of the library at the Technical University in Vienna . Here, too, he introduced numerous improvements. He reorganized the library from the ground up and made it an independent academic institution independent of the university. For his services he was awarded the title of kk 1893 Governing Council .

After a lengthy illness which made him unable to work, Friedriche Leithe died on December 15, 1896, at the age of 68 in Innsbruck. His written estate , consisting of expert opinions on library issues and the development of Austrian libraries, drafts of service regulations for the libraries, correspondence and life documents (certificates, birth certificates, curriculum vitae) with a term from 1828 to 1896, is in the Innsbruck University Library. For the Austrian Botanical Journal he published several articles on botany, especially on the cryptogam flora in Tyrol .
