Friedrich Majer (also Maier) (born April 28, 1772 in Koskau bei Schleiz , † May 15, 1818 in Gera ) was a German historian and folklorist .

Majer was born the son of a preacher and later a senior pastor in Tanna . From 1781 he studied in Jena and then lived in Weimar. From 1804-1805 he was tutor of the future Prince von Reuss-Schleiz Heinrich LXII. and led this at the universities of Würzburg and Bamberg. Because of the events of the war , the Prince's Grand Tour , on which Majer was scheduled to accompany, could not take place. Therefore he lived in Jena and taught as a private lecturer in Weimar. From 1804 he was princely Reussisch-Schleizischer councilor, most recently legation councilor . From 1802 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

Majer's research focus was on folklore, especially religious studies. He was a student of Johann Gottfried Herder and introduced Arthur Schopenhauer to ancient Hindu thinking in 1813 .
