Friedrich Panzer (collector of sagas)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Panzer (born October 22, 1794 in Eschenfelden (Upper Palatinate), † November 16, 1854 in Munich ) was a Bavarian saga collector and architect.

In 1813 he graduated from the (today's) Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich .

Panzer worked as an architect in the Bavarian civil service and was involved in the design of the chapel on the Altenburg (Bamberg) in 1834 . In 1839 he became a government building officer in Munich and in 1843 a senior ministerial building officer. In 1852 he became a Knight of the Order of Merit of St. Michael .

On his business trips he collected legends, where he was particularly interested in those stories in which he smelled traces of ancient beliefs in gods . His collection of sagas, Bavarian Legends and Customs (Vol. 1 1848, Vol. 2 posthumously 1855) therefore represented the mythological interpretation of legends, which is rejected today. However, the work is one of the classics of the historical Bavarian saga collections.
