Alois Ehrlich OCarm (born September 20, 1868 in Massing near Eggenfelden, † June 21, 1945 in Bamberg ) was a German cabinet maker, brother of the Carmelites and died in the name of holiness .

Life

Franz Seraph Ehrlich was born in Massing near Eggenfelden as the fifth child of the carpenter and glazier Johann Baptist Ehrlich and his wife Margaretha Strasser. He was an acolyte and a male servant. He learned the carpentry trade from his father. After the death of his father, he sold the prosperous business and property to a relative.

On December 27, 1896, he entered the Straubing Carmelite Monastery . When he was dressed as a novice on February 6, 1897, he was given the religious name Alois Rabata. He made his simple profession on February 8, 1898. In 1902 he was sent to Bamberg, where he made the acquired Carmelite monastery habitable and refurbished the empty church, which had been used as a storage room. Except for a few parts, the interior of the Carmelite Church comes from him. He was also active in handicrafts in the Carmelite monasteries and churches of Springiersbach , Bad Reichenhall , Vienna and Rome .

1928/1929 he worked in the Holy Land in the branch in Nablus (Sichem).

The rest of the time - interrupted by work trips - he spent in Bamberg. In 1945 he was diagnosed with incurable cancer. Ehrlich died of this disease on June 21, 1945.

Burial places

Brother Alois was buried in the monastery crypt in the Bamberg cemetery. Probably at the intercession of the people, his body was exhumed on November 27, 1947 and transferred to the Marienkapelle, located to the side of the choir of the Carmelite Church. When the church was being renovated in 1981, this chapel was abandoned and the coffin was moved to a chapel to the right of the main entrance to the church.

Adoration

Alois Ehrlich was a very quiet and extremely pious person during his lifetime. He was often seen praying long before the tabernacle . This made an impression on his surroundings, and he was already highly revered as a role model during his lifetime. After he was moved to the side chapel, he was revered even more.

Beatification process

A beatification process was initiated under Father Thaddäus Ballsieper in 1953 , which was interrupted after his death in 1978. However, popular veneration increased and in 1997 the preparatory work was resumed.

The Commissioner and Vice Postulator Causa for the beatification process of Alois Ehrlich is Fr. Johannes Maria Nutzel O.Carm, Bamberg.
