Reuter worked as a forester in the service of the Lords of Jagow from 1825, first in Kapermoor near Arendsee , then from 1831 as administrator and finally as chief forester of the Garbe forest district . He became known for his work The culture of the oak and the willow in connection with field crops to increase the yield of the forests and to improve hunting: The wild pheasant breeding in the sheaf , which was published by his son, the Prussian chief forester Wilhelm Reuter , published by Julius Springer was published. A second, revised version was published in 1867, and in 1875, after the death of Friedrich Reuter, a third, completely revised and enlarged edition.

Reuter dealt with the regulation of the Elbe and built dikes on the sheaf to protect it against the summer floods before he began the planned culture of the peninsula. Reuter's attempts to grow oak and willow trees, including on sandy soils, were known in forestry circles. In addition, he created a pheasant hunting ground in the sheaf, which was occasionally used by representatives of the Prussian royal family.
