Friedrich Schenck from Winterstädt
Friedrich Schenck von Winterstädt (also Schenk von Winterstedt ; born June 26, 1603 in Sulzburg , † October 19, 1659 in Aachen ) was a German statesman .
Life
Schenck's father was Johann Melchior Schenck von Winterstädt, privy councilor and chief bailiff to the Margrave of Baden-Durlach . Friedrich graduated from Durlach high school and then joined the Union Army in 1619 . After the dissolution of this he went into the military service with Ernst von Mansfeld and finally into the service of the Republic of Venice . He returned home, left the military and went into the service of his sovereign. There he met Duke Georg von Braunschweig-Lüneburg who appointed him court master of his children in 1629 .
Schenck gained a good reputation at court, so that he quickly embarked on a higher career. In 1633, Duke August transferred the Giffhorn captaincy to him . In 1639 there was an unusual case that the former military schenck, who had not studied, moved up into the government as a secret chamber councilor. However, he seemed to have exercised his office to the satisfaction of the rule, because in 1641 his former pupil Duke Christian Ludwig appointed him President of the Chamber. When Duke Christian Ludwig moved to Celle in 1648, he only took Schenck from his higher officials with him and appointed him governor in 1650 . As such, he was entrusted by the Duke with the management of government affairs.
Schenck's achievements include the reorganization of rule and the expansion of Lüneburg's hegemony in the region. He also achieved the re-establishment of a small standing army . In addition, he managed to resolve a large number of diplomatic entanglements in favor of the Lüneburg rule. He is said to have conducted his business of government with great zeal.
