Friedrich Schreiber (born March 30, 1932 in Munich ) is a German journalist and publicist . His focus is on the politics of the Near and Middle East as well as persecution and resistance during the National Socialist era .

School and study

After finishing school in Munich and Freising, Schreiber studied economics and political science in the USA and Munich from 1952 to 1956. 1956 graduate economist and 1962 doctorate at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . Already during his studies and during his doctorate he showed a strong international orientation: in 1952/53 he received a Fulbright scholarship at Wesleyan University and in 1957/58 he completed a research stay in Paris with a research grant from NATO .

From 1959 to 1964 he initially worked as an economist at the EEC Commission in Brussels with a focus on economic and social development in Africa at the Directorate General for Overseas Development Issues.

In 1964 he switched to Bayerischer Rundfunk as a television journalist and was in charge of the European editorial team there until 1972. During his time as head of the foreign editorial department (1972–1987), numerous reports from the Near and Middle East shaped his work, and in 1988 he went to Tel Aviv for nine years as the ARD's Middle East correspondent . Schreiber became the “face of the Middle East conflict” on ARD; on the occasion of the end of his career as a television journalist, he was awarded the German Critics' Prize "for exemplary international reporting" in March 1997 .

Even before his time as a foreign correspondent, and especially after his return to Germany, Schreiber taught at several Bavarian universities as a lecturer for politics in the Near and Middle East and for communication politics:

Friedrich Schreiber has been a member of the SPD since 1962. Since his return to Germany in 1997, Schreiber has been a member of the Association Against Forgetting - For Democracy and is intensively and actively involved in the home environment for the memory of victims of the Nazi regime and the resistance against Hitler. Since 1998 Schreiber has been the spokesman for the "Würmtaler Citizens' Initiative to Remember the Death March of Dachau" and in 2004 he founded the "Association of Resistance and Persecution in Bavaria". In 2005 he designed the content of the website “Death March of Dachau - Remembrance and Commemoration” and in 2007 he founded the association “Commemoration in the Würmtal”, of which he is also chairman. Schreiber lives in Lochham .
