biography

He was the son of a silk fabric manufacturer. After graduating from secondary school in Vienna-Schottenfeld, he studied at the engineering school from 1874–75. From 1875 he studied at the architectural architecture school of the Vienna University of Technology , which he graduated with an Absolutorium in 1880 . In 1880 he worked for Otto Wagner in Vienna, from 1880–86 he worked for the Graz architect Johann Wist, among other things, in the new construction of the technical university there . From 1880–90 he was an assistant at the university, from 1881 self-employed in construction and also worked as an expert at the Graz Regional Court . From 1891 he was a supplement at the Graz State Trade School, and from 1896 professor. He retired in 1914. In 1915 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order for his services.

His study trips took him to Italy from 1879–80, and to Germany and Switzerland several times from 1883–90. In 1900 he stayed in Paris and London.

Sigmundt drafted plans for Alpine shelters and inns and also worked for the Southern Railway Company . The extent to which he was involved in the planning of their international hotel complexes is not clearly proven. His major projects included the house of the Mutual Fire Damage Insurance Institution in Graz, which he built together with Leopold Theyer , as well as the new building of the Graz department store Kastner & Öhler in 1894 . One of his most outstanding works was the Urbanc department store in Laibach, which was built in 1902-03.

His other works included a number of villas in Carinthia and Styria, fountains, grave monuments, gardens, etc.

He was with Amalia, b. Knöbl married. He died in his house on Sparberchsgasse.
