Friedrich Stein (born February 24, 1820 in Laufach , † September 4, 1905 in Schweinfurt ) was a lawyer and historian; he was and is still often called the "historian of Franconia".

Life

Stein was the son of an ironworks owner in Laufach. He attended elementary school and high school in Lohr am Main and passed his Abitur in Nuremberg in 1838 . He then studied law in Erlangen , Munich and Heidelberg . After his doctorate in Erlangen in 1842 and the state examination in law in Ansbach , he joined a law firm in Schweinfurt in 1846 as a trainee lawyer . In 1851 he established himself as an independent lawyer in Hilders ; There he married Henriette Goll in 1852, daughter of the later Schweinfurt District Court Councilor Wilhelm Goll. In 1853 he moved to Bischofsheim and finally in 1857 to Schweinfurt, where he was admitted as a lawyer at the royal district court and officially in the municipality in 1865.

In Schweinfurt he was very involved in the city's social life. From 1872 to 1876 he was second and from 1876 to 1890 first chairman of the community college . In 1879, after the legal profession had become a free profession independent of the state, he was admitted to the Schweinfurt Regional Court ; he held this position until 1893. He was particularly interested in the history of Schweinfurt and its wider surroundings, and he made significant contributions to historical research in the area. From 1877 until his death he was the administrator of the city library, which he organized and cataloged, and for the city archive, which he also directed from January 1887, he created a repertory . He was also closely involved in the establishment of the Rückert Association in 1881, then the preparation of the 1890 erected on the square in Schweinfurt Rückert monument drove forward.

His first publication as a regional historian was a treatise on the older conditions of the city of Lohr , published in 1868 in the archive of the Historical Association of Lower Franconia and Aschaffenburg . This was followed by further work on the Counts of Rieneck and the city of Lohr, most recently his history of the city of Lohr a. M. from the earliest times to the transition to the crown of Bavaria . From 1872 Stein dealt in detail with the history of the margraves of Schweinfurt and the city of Schweinfurt. Probably his most important work on this was the Monumenta Suinfurtensia historiea inde ab anno DCCXCI usque ad annum MDC published in 1875 ; Monuments of Schweinfurt's history up to the end of the sixteenth century . It was the first document book of a Franconian city to appear in print and to meet scientific standards. In 1900 his two-volume history of the imperial city of Schweinfurt was published . In 1901 he added the third part of the chronicle of the town of Schweinfurt in the nineteenth century with attached tables about the population, town councilors and town pastors . In addition, Stein dealt with various aspects of the history of Franconia; in addition, he published his history of Franconia in two volumes in 1885 and 1886 .

Stein died on September 4, 1905 in Schweinfurt. He was buried in the old cemetery on Schultesstrasse, where his tombstone can still be seen today.

In 1892 he received the golden doctoral degree from the University of Erlangen. In 1897 he became an honorary member of the Historical Association for Lower Franconia and Aschaffenburg. In Schweinfurt, a street that was newly laid out in 1904 was initially called "Steinstraße", then in 1955 it was renamed "Friedrich-Stein-Straße".
