Friedrich Freiherr Sunstenau von Schützenthal (born September 14, 1807 in Vienna , † July 24, 1848 near Sommacampagna , Italy) was an Austrian officer and holder of the Knight's Cross of the Maria Theresa Order .

In Sommacampagna there is still a memorial to Friedrich Freiherr Sunstenau von Schützenthal today. It is composed of a six foot high marble column in two towers, on one foot high and six foot long pedestals. Decorated on one side with the Theresienkreuz and with the inscription:

Lieutenant Colonel Friedrich Baron Sunstenau died a heroic death here on July 24, 1848

on the other side the inscription, like the first engraved in stone:

Friedrich Sunstenau von Schützenthal was born on September 14, 1807 as the son of Freiherr Heinrich Sunstenau von Schützenthal and his wife Dominica von Koudriaffsky at Landstraßer Hauptstrasse 84 in Vienna. His baptismal name given the following day was Friedrich Aemilianus Heinrich . He first attended the Landstraßer Hauptschule before entering the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt . After successfully completing this, he became a cadet in the engineer corps in 1824 , where he was made a subordinate on September 9, 1825. The other promotions took place at regular intervals, so that he was first lieutenant and finally captain by July 16, 1829 . As such, he first served in infantry regiments 11 and 40, but was then transferred as a lieutenant colonel to infantry regiment No. 54 "Prince Emil of Hesse". Friedrich Sunstenau von Schützenthal married Anna Theresia Elisabeth von Hartmann on July 25, 1843 in Bohemia , with whom he had two daughters. He finally fell on July 24, 1848, during the First Italian War of Unification, at the Battle of Sommacampagna . On June 29, 1849, he was posthumously awarded the Knight's Cross of the Maria Theresa Order for his conduct in battle .
