Friedrich Weidig (born May 26, 1859 in Gießen , † September 28, 1933 in Munich ) was a German artist. He worked as a painter and sculptor .

Life

Weidig was the son of an accountant. He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Frankfurt a. M. with Professor Ferdinand Luthmer and then from 1881 to 1885 in the class of antiquities at the Royal Art Academy . His teachers were Professors Alexander Strähuber , Nikolaus Gysis and Franz von Seitz .

Weidig settled as an artist in Munich and made a name for himself primarily as a portrait painter. Many works were created on behalf of the public. Weidig created portraits of Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria (1911), Otto von Bismarck , Paul von Hindenburg , Adolf Hitler and Theodor Mommsen , among others . Numerous paintings were created based on older portraits. A portrait of Bismarck created by Franz von Lenbach served Weidig as a model for his work.
