Franz von Seitz (born December 31, 1817 in Munich ; † April 13, 1883 ibid) was a German painter, lithographer , etcher and costume designer as well as a university professor and theater director.

Life

His father was Johann Baptist Seitz (1786–1850), who had made a name for himself as a type engraver, topographer and mechanic in Munich. Seitz studied at the Munich Art Academy with Joseph Schlotthauer and then worked independently as a lithographer and etcher. In 1848 he took over the artistic direction of the satirical magazine Leuchtkugeln . From 1855 he was a costume designer for the Munich court theater . In 1858 he was appointed professor at the Munich Art Academy. In 1869 he became artistic director of the Hofbühne and head of the stage equipment for the Hof- und Residenztheater . In 1876 he retired and became an honorary member of the art academy.

Among other things, numerous designs for the artistic design and furnishings of Linderhof Palace come from him and his son Rudolf . Franz and Rudolf Seitz also designed the interior of Ludwig II's court train based on the model of the Palace of Versailles.

He was married to Wilhelmine Königer and had several children, including the painter, draftsman and craftsman Rudolf von Seitz .

The grave of Franz Seitz is located in the old south cemetery in Munich (grave field 25 - row 13 - place 36) location .
