Friedrich Wilhelm Felgentreu (born May 8, 1786 in Berlin , † September 16, 1809 in Wesel ) was a Prussian officer and artillery lieutenant in Major Ferdinand von Schill's Freikorps . He was significantly involved in the Prussian popular uprising against Napoleonic rule in 1809.

Felgentreu itself was only artillery - free corporal . However, Schill promoted him to lieutenant .

Historical background

After the Peace of Tilsit , Ferdinand von Schill formed a free corps to fight the French, the Schill hunters. The fight failed, von Schill fell and the eleven officers from Schill's corps were shot dead on September 16, 1809 on the Lippewiesen south-east of Wesel .

Memory and honor

Looking back, many see the uprising of Major Ferdinand Baptista von Schill and the heroic death of Schill's officers as an initial spark for the later Prussian revolt against Napoleonic foreign rule and the manifest expression of Prussian self-image. To commemorate the anniversary of the death of the 11 Schill officers, a memorial was inaugurated on March 31, 1835 on the site of their execution on the Lippewiesen, based on a design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel . Since May 3, 1935, a side street in Berlin-Lankwitz has been called Felgentreus.
