Fritz-Heiner Mutschler

Fritz-Heiner Georg Mutschler (born January 4, 1946 in Heidelberg ) is a German classical philologist .

Life

Mutschler studied classical philology at the University of Heidelberg and the Free University of Berlin from 1965 to 1973 . In 1973 he received his doctorate in Berlin with a thesis on Caesar's commentaries . From 1973 to 1988 he worked as a research assistant, after his habilitation in 1982 as a temporary professor at the University of Heidelberg. From 1988 to 1992 he was visiting professor for Western Classics at the Institute for the History of Ancient Civilizations in Changchun and in Tianjin . In 1993 Mutschler was appointed to the newly established professorship for Classical Philology / Latin Studies at the Technical University of Dresden . On April 1, 2011, he retired. From September 2011 to 2014 he taught Western Classics as a visiting professor at Peking University .

Mutschler deals with Augustan poetry, ancient historiography from a comparative point of view, with social values ​​and literary communication in ancient Rome and with Roman philosophy. Currently, he is mainly in charge of two temporary research projects: Reich and Welt. Constructions of the own and the foreign in the historical discourse of ancient empires: Rome and ancient China as examples and the Roman mos maiorum : order of values ​​and literary communication .
