Fritz Redlich (medical doctor)

Frederick Carl "Fritz" Redlich (born June 2, 1910 in Vienna ; † January 1, 2004 in New Haven , Connecticut ) was an Austrian - American physician.

Life

Redlich was born in Vienna as the son of Ludwig and Emma Redlich. After graduating from the University of Vienna, he studied psychology and medicine and then worked in the internal department of the Vienna General Hospital. Although raised Catholic, he found out at age 24 that he was originally of Jewish descent. During his studies, he spent a year at Wittenberg College (now Wittenberg University ) in Springfield , Ohio . After completing his specialist training as a neurologist and psychiatrist, he and his wife Elsa, also a doctor, emigrated to the United States in 1938 . In 1953 the couple divorced. In 1943 he took on the US citizenship.

In the United States, Redlich devoted himself primarily to psychiatry and became the founder of American social psychiatry . He was also chairman of the psychiatry department and dean of the medical school at the elite Yale University . In 1977 he was appointed professor of psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles .

Redlich was the recipient of numerous high honors and awards and a member or chairman of national and international professional societies, u. a. since 1968 member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He was the author and co-author of internationally recognized work in the field of psychiatry and psychotherapy, as the collaboration with Daniel X. Freedman wrote band theory and practice of psychiatry ( The theory and practice of psychiatry ).

Redlich dealt with Adolf Hitler's psychopathography for years . He published his book Hitler: Diagnosis of a destructive Prophet , which became a standard work, at the age of 88.

Fritz Redlich was married to the opera singer Herta Glaz (1910-2006) for the second time .
