Fritz Steppat

Fritz Steppat (born June 24, 1923 in Chemnitz , † August 7, 2006 in Berlin ) was a German scholar of Islam . He is one of the representatives of contemporary, interdisciplinary and practice-oriented research on the Orient in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Life

After training as a typesetter and studying Arabic at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin (1940–1941) he was conscripted. He joined the NSDAP at the age of nineteen . After the Second World War he worked initially as a freelance journalist (including for the Europa-Archiv ), then as a foreign editor for the Münchner Neue Zeitung (1948–1949) and the Münchner Merkur (1949–1951). In 1952 he began his doctoral studies at the Free University of Berlin , which he completed in 1954 with his dissertation on nationalism and Islam with Mustafa Kamil .

From 1955 to 1959 he set up the Cairo Goethe Institute as a founding director . From 1959 to 1963 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Religious Studies at the Free University of Berlin, and then, from 1963 to 1968, he was head of the Orient Institute of Beirut of the German Oriental Society . From 1969 to 1988 he was a full professor for Islamic studies at the Free University of Berlin. He played a key role in creating the prerequisites for the establishment of an interdisciplinary focus “Modern Middle East” at this university in 1980 with funds from the Volkswagenwerk Foundation .

His private research library has been at the Zentrum Moderner Orient in Nikolassee since 1998 .
