Fritz Ziegler

Friedrich "Fritz" J. Ziegler (born January 1, 1933 in Gelsenkirchen ; † July 26, 2020 ) was the district president in Arnsberg and chairman of the board of the VEW .

Life

Ziegler was initially a miner , but also completed a business degree at the Social Academy in Dortmund . He was also involved in the trade union and the SPD .

In 1967 Ziegler became personal advisor to the North Rhine-Westphalian Minister for Labor, Health and Social Affairs, Werner Figgen . He then served as district president in Arnsberg between 1973 and 1977 .

He then became a member of the board of Dortmund Bergbau AG Westfalen, a subsidiary of Ruhrkohle AG . Between 1981 and 1990 he was Labor Director on the board of Ruhrkohle AG. During his term of office, around 46,000 jobs were cut in a socially acceptable manner. In 1990 he moved to the board of directors of VEW and became its chairman in 1993 .

In 1998 Ziegler was briefly taken into custody on charges of private tax evasion in the six-figure range. In a comprehensive confession, he admitted the allegations. Ziegler then returned to his position as CEO, as the company's supervisory board also refused to dismiss. He only resigned under pressure from public opinion.

In December 2018, Ziegler was honored with the SPD's highest award, the Willy Brandt Medal , for his life's work.

Ziegler lived in Wickede (Ruhr) . He died in a hospital on July 26, 2020
