Frode Kippe (born November 17, 1978 in Oslo) is a former Norwegian football player . Most recently he was captain of the Norwegian club Lillestrøm SK , of which he was a member from 1997 to 1998 and from 2002 to 2019.

In 2007 he received the Kniksenprisen as "Defender of the Year" in the Tippeligaen .

Club career

The early years

Kippe began his career with the small Kolbotn IL in his hometown Oslo. There he was discovered by scouts from Lillestrøm SK at the age of 18 and brought to the club. In his first season it was enough in a Lillestrømer team playing against relegation only to 9 missions without scoring before he became a regular player in the following season. The club had nothing to do with the relegation in central defense and occupied a safe place in the midfield of the league. During this time he was also a regular in a talented Norwegian U-21 national team that traditionally attracted the attention of various scouts from England. So it happened that Kippe was recommended to the then Liverpool manager Roy Evans, who was looking for perspective players.

Apprenticeship years on the island

Kippe then moved to Liverpool for around £ 700,000 in the Premier League . Along with Bjørn Tore Kvarme , Øyvind Leonhardsen , Stig Inge Bjørnebye and Vegard Heggem , the fifth Norwegian with the club at that time, the manager duo Evans / Houllier was already touted as the upcoming man in the Reds' central defense at his official presentation. But things turned out differently. In his first season he injured his knee early and was out almost the entire 1998/99 season. In the end it was only enough for the A-team to play in a League Cup . Also in the following season he was convalescent by September 1999 and was awarded for the purpose of match practice for three months in the English Football League Second Division at Stoke City .

At the "Potters" he surprisingly achieved a regular place and became a crowd favorite. At the end of the season, the team managed to qualify for relegation games in the Football League Championship with 6th place . Kippe was used in 15 games this season and was able to score one goal. In the relegation Stoke could no longer fall back on cigarette butts, as this was ordered back to Liverpool for the final phase of the Premier League.

As a result, he sat several times on the Reds bench until October 2000, but did not come to any regular use in the A-team. In October, an official request was received from Stoke to borrow a fag again. Liverpool agreed and Kippe went to Division Two a second time. On his return he also met expectations. Again he immediately had a regular place and played with Stoke in the promotion zone. This time he stayed until May 2001 before his contract expired and Liverpool brought him back again. Stoke, who also had a place in the qualifying games for promotion this year, were striving for a longer loan, but Liverpool crossed it again.

He did not come back to any league until February 2002 and was no longer considered in the cup games. Despite the absence of Markus Babbel , he couldn't get past the regular central defenders Sami Hyypiä and Stéphane Henchoz , and even as a substitute Houllier favored other up-and-coming talents like Djimi Traoré or Grégory Vignal at the time . In February 2002 the "misunderstanding - flaw at Liverpool" came to an end when Houllier let him move to his home club Lillestrøm SK for free. During his four-year contract he could only book 2 cup games in the A-team. To this day, the reasons for his failure at Liverpool are discussed in various fan forums.

National player at home

After his more than unhappy time on the island, Kippe had a hard time at home at the beginning of his return to Norway. In his first season he often acted insecure and only completed 15 season games with one goal. This changed in the following season. Kippe's performance curve showed a steep upward trend, and he became an outstanding player personality in a weak team. In addition to his 25 games this season and five goals, he also made his debut for the Norwegian national team . In the years that followed, Kippe remained loyal to his parent club and is now an icon of the club. He completed his strongest season to date in 2007, which was crowned with the Norwegian Cup victory and the Kniksenprisen for the best defender in Norway. Most recently he was the captain of his team. At the end of the 2019 season, he retired at the age of 41; He could not prevent the bitter relegation to the second division after the relegation against Start Kristiansand , which was lost due to the away goals rule .

National team

It wasn't until 1998 that he got his first national team honor as a regular player in the Norwegian U-21 team .

In 2003 he was called up for the first time in the Norwegian national team after strong performances for Lillestrøm . Since then he has been with the national team with short interruptions, but has not been able to fight for a regular place to date (September 2009). In September 2009 he was last substituted on in the qualification for the Soccer World Cup 2010 , in the game against Greece , when the score was 2-2 for Bjørn Helge Riise .
