Bjørn Tore Kvarme (born June 17, 1972 in Trondheim ) is a former Norwegian football player . The central defender , who could also be used on the right defensive side, won the Norwegian championship five times and the cup twice with his home club Rosenborg BK in the 1990s before moving abroad and in the highest national competitions in England, France and Spain Divisions was active.

Athletic career

In the early and mid-1990s, Kvarme was part of the then best Norwegian football team, which won the domestic championship five times and the cup twice between 1992 and 1996. In addition, Rosenborg Trondheim also attracted international attention, at the latest after the club had defeated AC Milan in the group stage in the 1996/97 Champions League season and thus eliminated them from the current competition. As a result, Kvarme aroused interest in well-known clubs, especially since he was free transfer in January 1997 after the Bosman decision . A planned move to Stabæk within Norway was soon lost after the renowned Liverpool FC launched an offer. In Liverpool, his former team-mate Stig Inge Bjørnebye had already established himself and Scandinavians in the English Premier League were said to be able to adapt to the body-hugging style of play and to have good language skills.

The newcomer quickly established himself with the "Reds" in central defense and occasionally on the right wing . His physical style of play was characterized by simplicity and he was comparatively fast for a defender. He completed in the team coached by Roy Evans all the remaining games of the 1996/97 season with the exception of the European Cup games (for which he was not allowed to play because of his Rosenborg missions). Kvarme was considered a "stroke of luck" because it quickly filled the gap in which John Scales turned away in December 1996 ; During the 1997 summer break, he spent a large part of the time at his ex-club in Trondheim, primarily to work on his remaining weaknesses in the header game. A turning point in his career marked October 18, 1997, when his mistake in the derby against Everton resulted in the 2-0 final through Danny Cadamarteri . Although he initially kept his regular seat, after another faux pas against Manchester United , coach Evans himself made him a target of criticism. Surprisingly, he stayed in the starting line-up for the rest of the calendar year, but another poor performance in early January 1998 at 1: 3 at home against Coventry City in the FA Cup (especially in his duels with Darren Huckerby ) ensured that Evans did not play him continued to hold on. Kvarme was no longer a regular feature in Liverpool and left the club at the beginning of the 1999/2000 season after the new coach Gérard Houllier had hired two new central defenders with Sami Hyypiä and Stéphane Henchoz .

At the end of August 1999, Kvarme moved to France for first division promoted AS Saint-Étienne . There he completed two years, was in the meantime captain of the team and moved after the end of the 2000/01 season (after the relegation of the club) to Spain in the Basque Country to the first division club Real Sociedad San Sebastián . There he was part of the team that surprisingly played for the championship in 2003 and only just missed it as runner-up behind Real Madrid . After a total of three years there, he returned to France and played in the 2004/05 season at the later Corsican relegated SC Bastia . From 2005 Kvarme let his career at home club Rosenborg end and in 2006 won his sixth Norwegian championship. Due to injury, he announced his retirement from active sport in June 2008.
