From Soup to Dessert (Original title: From Soup to Nuts ) is an American silent short film comedy from 1928 with the comedian duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in the leading roles. Edgar Kennedy , who is much better known as an actor, was directed under the pseudonym E. Livingston Kennedy .

action

The wealthy couple Culpepper hosted a dinner party and asked the employment agency to provide two additional, possibly cultivated, waiters. However, the labor exchange can only find Stan and Ollie, who have only worked in railroad restaurants. New in these upscale surroundings, Ollie generously explains to Stan that he always has to take off his hat in a fine house - when Stan tries to force the chef to take off his chef's hat shortly after their arrival, there is already the first argument. The cook and Stan smash numerous plates in the kitchen in their argument.

Stan and Ollie also have no luck with serving: Among other things, the house dog leaves a banana that they fall over several times - two cakes land one behind the other on the floor and the angry Mr. Culpepper also gets a load of soup when Stan falls his suit. Mrs. Culpepper asks Stan and Ollie to serve the salad "without anything" - she means without dressing . Stan thinks that now he has to serve without clothes - he hesitates and is shocked what kind of party it is, but finally he dutifully serves in underwear. Ollie tries to shield Stan from the guests with a suit, but the indignant Mrs. Culpepper throws Ollie into what is now the third cake.

background

From Soup to Nuts was shot between December 1927 and January 1928 and was released in American cinemas on March 24, 1928.

Laurel and Hardy made a remake of From Soup to Nuts within their feature film In Oxford for 12 years : In the first 20 minutes of In Oxford they are sent by the employment office to the Wanderwild couple , who are holding a party. The somewhat snobbish hostess Mrs. Culpepper or Mrs. Wanderwild was played by Anita Garvin . Many of the gags were reused, including serving Stan's “Salad Without Anything”. A change between the two films is that Stan also has to dress up as a woman in In Oxford , as the wild animals are expecting a married couple - on the other hand, the role of the maid, which Laurel takes on, is missing. The part of the chef Pierre is present, but is limited to a brief appearance.
