The first publication of Rosa foetida was in 1762 by Johann Herrmann (1738-1800). Synonyms for Rosa foetida Herrm. are: Rosa lutea Mill. , Rosa eglanteria Mill. non L. The specific epithet oetida is derived from the Latin word foetidus for smelly and refers to the smell of the flowers, which is rather unpleasant and reminds of a fox.

Horticultural history and site conditions as an ornamental plant

The wild rose Rosa foetida was probably introduced to Europe from Central Asia or Southwest Asia in 1540 . The orange-red sport Rosa foetida 'Bicolor' was also introduced to Europe in the 16th century. It is also known by the synonym 'Austrian Copper'.

Another sport, 'Persiana' or 'Persian Yellow', with double, yellow flowers was found in 1837. The rose breeder Joseph Pernet-Ducher crossed the first yellow garden rose - 'Soleil d´Or' - from this sport of Rosa foetida , which came onto the market in 1900 . The yellow and orange-red flowers of modern garden roses only emerged through the crossing of Rosa foetida .

Rosa foetida does best in regions with hot summers and cold winters. It is frost hardy to –35 ° C ( USDA zone 4 ).
