Fuerte Olimpo is the capital of the Alto Paraguay department in northern Paraguay . The economic activity in Fuerte Olimpo is concentrated on livestock. It has 4370 inhabitants (as of 2018).
history
Fuerte Olimpo was founded on September 25, 1792 under the name Fuerte Borbón to repel the invasions of the Portuguese from Brazil.
geography
Fuerte Olimpo is 760 km from Asunción in the sparsely populated Chaco region on the Río Paraguay , on the border with Brazil . The city is surrounded by a four kilometer long wall. It is located on a hill and is therefore protected from flooding. The road connection of the small town is only passable at times; the most important transport connection to the hinterland is the port on the Río Paraguay. Fuerte Olimpo is addressed as the entrance to the Pantanal wetland ("la puerta de entrada al Pantanal"). Temperatures can rise to 45 ° C in summer and drop to 9 ° C in winter.
