Broadview Heights is a city on the southern edge of Cuyahoga County in the US state of Ohio . It is located 20.7 kilometers south of Cleveland , on the edge of the suburban belt and not far from the intersection of Interstate 77 and Interstate 80 . The city is 13.07 square miles (33.85 km²) and had (2010) 19,400 inhabitants, 91.0% of them white.
geography
The city is located on a range of hills that stretches between the Cuyahoga River in the east and the Rocky River in the west. It is one of the highest villages in Cuyahoga County. Neighboring communities are North Royalton to the west, Parma , Seven Hills and Independence to the north, and Brecksville to the east. Adjacent to the south are Medina County and Summit Counties .
Broadview Heights is a predominantly residential community and is made up of dispersed, unrelated residential areas. Large parts of the urban area are forested and are traversed by small streams that drain to the east. There are two golf courses as well as a few insignificant commercial establishments near the highways. Between 1966 and 1993 the state of Ohio operated a mental hospital here on the site of a former lung sanatorium of the Department of Veterans Affairs .
history
The place was originally exactly on the borderline between the two townships Royalton and Brecksville and was thus divided in the middle. The border ran exactly on the main street, Broadview Road. When the western and eastern settlements were spun off in 1918 (North Royalton) and 1922 (Brecksville), Broadview Heights finally followed in 1926. The political division was thus overcome, but nothing changed in the school districts . Broadview Heights does not have its own schools, but is divided in this regard exactly on the said borderline between the two neighboring cities.
The population remained small well into the 20th century. Only after the Second World War and with the construction of the highways did strong population growth set in, which is still going on in the greater Cleveland area despite the stagnating and ultimately even declining population.
