The Fuerzas Aeromóviles del Ejército de Tierra ( FAMET ) are the air force of the Spanish army . They primarily carry out their orders using aircraft , especially military helicopters . The FAMET are among the support troops, their priority areas of activity are infantry support , anti-tank defense , air combat , air transport of personnel and material, reconnaissance as well as search and rescue .
history
The establishment of the Army Aviation Force as Aviación Ligera del Ejército de Tierra (ALET) took place in Spain on July 10, 1965 as part of a reorganization of the armed forces, which initially consisted of only one company. In May 1966 it was upgraded to a battalion and renamed Unidad de Helicópteros XI para Cuerpo de Ejército (UHEL-XI) , but it was not until July of the same year that the Spanish military aviators received their first aircraft, a total of six Bell UH-1 Iroquois and eight OH-13S Sioux helicopter from stocks of the United States Army .
Further units were created in the first half of the 1970s. As a second unit, the 2nd Battalion, the UHEL-II, was set up in El Aaiún in what was then the Spanish Sahara on March 20, 1971 , and on March 20, 1973 the ALET was finally renamed Fuerzas Aeromóviles del Ejército de Tierra (FAMET) . The V Battalion, the UHEL-V, was set up 10 days later on April 1, 1973 in Colmenar Viejo and on May 28 of the following year the UHEL-III was set up in Agoncillo. The UHEL-IV was initially the last unit to be activated in El Copero on June 30, 1975, and as a result of the Spanish withdrawal from the Sahara, the UHEL-II there was also relocated to El Copero in December 1975. The latter was finally moved to Bétera in August 1979.
Later the designation as "helicopter unit" UHEL was given up and in January another battalion, the BHELA-I ( Batallón de Helicópteros de Ataque I ), a combat helicopter battalion, was set up in Colmenar Viejo . This moved to Almagro in the spring of 1983 and on April 26, 1986 the BHELMA-VI ( Batallón de Helicópteros de Maniobra VI ) was created in the Canary Islands. One of the oldest units, the BHELMA-II, was disbanded at the end of January 2008 and was replaced on December 12, 2008 by the BHELEME-II ( Batallón de Helicópteros de Emergencias ), a rescue helicopter battalion, whose sub-group with the medium-sized helicopters the Bétera base -Valencia uses and the sub-group with the light helicopters is in Colmenar Viejo.

Future aircraft
As part of a long-term plan announced in March 2015, the number of different helicopter types is to be reduced to four by 2040. These include the Tiger, NH90 and H135 from Airbus Helicopters as well as the Boeing CH-47F. The AB 212 are to be decommissioned in 2017.
