The Fujifilm Finepix S5 Pro ( Fuji S5 for short ) is a professional digital SLR camera from the Japanese company Fujifilm, based on the Nikon D200 . It is the successor to the Fujifilm Finepix S3 Pro and came onto the market in July 2007.

Special features

For the S5 Fuji uses the spill-resistant metal housing made of a magnesium - alloy from the D200. On the front it is distinguished by the different manufacturer's lettering and a consistently black handle. On the back, the buttons to the left of the monitor are labeled differently.

The main technical differentiating feature of the Fuji S5 is the super CCD sensor type SRII with 6.17 million "S-pixels" and 6.17 million "R-pixels". As with S3, the S pixels corresponding to the function of the pixels in normal sensors are arranged offset to one another, the R pixels in the gaps. These are less sensitive to light and allow a higher dynamic range of up to 400%. The R pixels do not contribute to the resolution, but the sensor data is interpolated to 12.3 MP inside the camera. The dynamic range of the S5 can be set in six stages.

The range for the adjustable exposure index of the image sensor extends from ISO 100 to 3200 with a lower image noise than the previous model.

Another Fuji peculiarity is the adjustment of the color reproduction to analog Fuji film emulsions (e.g. the slide film Velvia ), which in the S5 has been expanded from two film simulation modes to six levels and the possibility of additional fine tuning.

The serial image speed has not changed compared to the S3. With conventional dynamic range (100%) the camera takes three pictures per second, with high dynamic range the frame rate is reduced to 1.5 fps. The buffer of the S5 is larger, so that with the full dynamic range it can record eight instead of three raw files (plus JPEG ) in series, 24 with standard dynamic and simple raw mode (without JPEG), up to 100 images with the lowest JPEG Image size and resolution without simultaneous raw recording.

A function of the camera specially designed for portraits is face recognition in the playback menu, which can be used to focus specifically on recognized faces.

There is a live preview with a magnifying glass function for still life , repro and macro photography and the use of manually focussed lenses .

Another innovation compared to its predecessor is the mirror lock-up option .

use

A typical application in which the increased contrast range is used are wedding photos. The requirements are particularly high due to the strong contrast between the white wedding dress and the black suit of the groom on the one hand and the required natural skin tones. The same applies to the areas of portrait or studio photography .

equipment

The Fuji S5 is largely compatible with the accessories of the Nikon D200 (lenses with Nikon F bayonet , also manual Ai lenses, iTTL flash system, remote release, handle, viewfinder accessories, power supply). However, the Fuji S5 uses its own type of battery (NP-150).

At the software level, however, both cameras are not compatible because Fuji uses its own raw data format (file extension .raf).

Fujifilm IS Pro

As a special model, Fujifilm offers a variant with extended spectral sensitivity under the name IS Pro in the United States and Great Britain. It enables recording in the wavelength range from 380 to 1000 nm. The IS Pro is the successor to the Finepix S3 Pro UVIR.
