#Funnyface ( spelling : #funnyFACE ) is a Spanish - German horror film by Marcel Walz from 2015. It belongs to the genre found footage .

action

Niclas and Franzi spend their honeymoon in a finca on Palma de Mallorca that is paid for by their in-laws . You have decided to document the trip via cell phone videos and GoPro . Everything is going well until they meet a pantomime disguised as a harlequin in a small town . When they return to their apartment, someone has tagged the mirror with a hashtag #funnyFace. Franzi wants to call the police, but Niclas doesn't want to spoil her vacation.

At night they are woken up by noises. In the home cinema of the finca, you will find a continuous broadcast of a video of your vacation, which is apparently broadcast on a website. A gruesome murder of another vacationer is then faded in. Then the harlequin reveals himself and first kills Niclas with a throat cut. Franzi hides in a grain field, but is also killed by Funnyface.

A vlogger then reports on the video that has just been seen. He thinks it's a snuff video and asks his fans for opinion.

background

The film was shot in 2015 on location in Palma de Mallorca. Chronologically, Macel Walz's oeuvre is a film between his first Hollywood production Seed 2 , which more or less flopped, and his breakthrough in Hollywood, Blood Feast 2 , a quasi-sequel to Blood Feast (1963) by Herschell Gordon Lewis . Walz himself saw the film as an experiment after returning to his beginnings as a splatter director in the German underground after Seed 2 . Accordingly, the film only contains one splatter scene, while the rest of the film dispenses with unnecessary violence. Up to half of the film is a found footage film, while the scenes from the twist are more in the style of a home invasion film or a slasher .

Although the film was made in 2015, Walz decided to release it later , apart from a premiere at the Weekend of Horrors festival and the broadcast of a YouTube press screener. This was mainly due to the release of Blood Feast 2 , which was released in theaters in the United States. The film was finally released on December 3, 2019 as a mediabook on the Austrian label 8Films.

Reviews

The film received few reviews. The fansite SplatGore wrote: “In most slasher films, you don’t be stingy with blood. Here you keep a low profile, but on the other hand the film works so well. You put much more emphasis on tension and atmosphere than on blood - which is also super important and especially in the exciting moments you can only take off your hat. The implementation here has also turned out well again. The rest of the film is quite acceptable (as I said, you've seen everything before). "Marc von Sofahelden.de wrote," All in all, the film unfortunately lacks the gore typical of the genre and also lacks nudity, which #funnyFace certainly does very well in the overall picture stood face to face and rounded off the entire staging once again. (...) The story itself does not reinvent the wheel and serves more as a means to an end, but if you stay tuned until after the credits, you will be rewarded with a nice twist. "
