description

Vegetative characteristics

Furcraea niquivilensis grows tree-shaped with unbranched trunks 1 to 3 meters high and 30 to 40 centimeters wide, covered with old, dry leaves. The leaf rosette reaches a diameter of 4 to 5 meters. The 80 to 150 upright, lanceolate leaves are fibrous and leathery. Their green, on both sides rough or sandpaper-like leaf blades are 190 to 210 centimeters (rarely from 170 centimeters) long and 12 to 14 centimeters wide. At the base of the leaf, the width is only 7 to 8.5 centimeters. At the tip of the leaf there is a dark chestnut brown, 1 to 4 millimeter long attached tip. Forward-facing or basal upright teeth sit on the straight edge of the leaf. The auburn, sloping teeth are yellowish at their base and are located on small protrusions. They are 5 to 6 millimeters (rarely up to 8 millimeters) long and 3 to 4 millimeters wide at their base. In the middle of the leaf, the marginal teeth are 2 to 4 centimeters (rarely from 1 centimeter) apart.

Generative characteristics

The pyramidal, finely downy-haired inflorescence reaches a height of 6 to 9 meters. The up to 230 centimeters long partial inflorescences carry bulbils 5.5 to 6.5 centimeters (rarely from 4 centimeters) in length and 4.5 to 6 centimeters (rarely 3 to 6.5 centimeters) wide. The up to three together flowers have a length of 75 to 80 millimeters (rarely from 70 millimeters). They stand on 5 to 10 millimeters long, finely downy-haired flower stalks . Their greenish white, elongated elliptical tepals are tinged with reddish on their outside. They are 40 to 45 millimeters (rarely up to 30 millimeters) long and 11 to 14 millimeters wide. The tepals are glabrous, but papilous on the overlapping parts of the inner tepals . The stamens are 20 to 25 millimeters long. The green, cylindrical and finely downy-haired ovary has a length of 35 to 38 millimeters and is 4 to 6 millimeters wide. The triangular, papillary stylus expanded at its base is 25 to 28 millimeters long.

Nothing is known about the fruits and seeds .

Systematics and distribution

Furcraea niquivilensis is distributed in the southeastern Mexican state of Chiapas at altitudes of 1,800 to 2,650 meters. It is only known to be cultivated in the vicinity of settlements.

The first description by Abisai Josue García-Mendoza was published in 1999. Furcraea niquivilensis is classified in the genus in the Serrulatae section .
