Johann Justus Sello
Johann Justus (Jost) Daniel Sell , from 1724 Sello (born April 8, 1690 in Ebersbach (today Ewersbach ), Nassau-Dillenburg , † October 19, 1768 in Berlin ) was a royal planner in the Berlin zoo . He is considered to be the founder of the Sello court gardening dynasty, which was in royal Prussian service for generations.
Live and act
Johann Justus Sell, the son of the agricultural citizen Johannes Sell and Anna Catherina, née Aurand, moved from what was then Ebersbach to Berlin in 1698. Before he entered the service of the Prussian court, he worked in the garden of the future Minister of State Ehrenreich Bogislaus von Creutz at Klosterstrasse 36.
In 1718 Friedrich Wilhelm I appointed him to the Berlin Zoo as the successor to the linden planner Johann Friedrich Schmeltz. Since the soldier king gave up some gardens in the course of far-reaching austerity measures and dismissed numerous gardeners, it was probably more of a coincidence [...] that Friedrich Wilhelm I [...] employed Johann Justus Sello [...] as a planner in the zoo and thus the progenitor of the great ones Selloschen family of gardeners with roots in Prussia. Sell, who called himself "Sello" from 1724, laid out a tree plantation on the way to Tempelhof on behalf of the king and was responsible for planting in and around Berlin.
After Frederick II came to power , the zoo, which was used as a hunting ground, was opened to the public. Under the direction of Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff , who was responsible for the administration of all royal palaces and gardens in Prussia, Johann Justus Sello worked from 1742 on transforming the zoo into a baroque pleasure park. Among other things, he decorated the area with bosquets and planted 6,000 linden trees in 1743 on the way to and from Charlottenburg , today Straße des 17. Juni . He also laid out a mulberry plantation on Landwehrgraben in 1754 .
family
Shortly before Johann Justus Sello entered royal service, he married on March 7, 1718 in the Cöllnische or Köpenicker suburbs, later Luisenstadt , Rahel Güntsch (* 1693), the daughter of the mayor Samuel Güntsch from Liebenwalde . The marriage had six children. Two sons took up the gardening profession. Ehrenreich Wilhelm , born in 1722, took over his father's position as planner in the zoo after the death of his father and Johann Samuel , born in 1724, became court gardener in Rheinsberg and in the kitchen garden of Sanssouci . Of the twin daughters Rahel and Anna Catharina, born in 1735 or 1739, the latter married the court gardener Johann Joseph Nietner , who is considered to be the founder of the Nietner court gardening dynasty .
