Furcraea bedinghausii is a species of the genus Furcraea in the subfamily of the agave family (Agavoideae). Thespecific epithet bedinghausii honors the Belgian gardener Hermann Joseph Bedinghaus (1806–1884).

description

Furcraea bedinghausii grows with upright, thick trunks 5 to 8 meters high and 30 to 40 centimeters wide. The foliage leaves, which are initially rising and spread out and later spread out to pendulous, form a dry "rock" under the leaf rosette . The lanceolate, sword-shaped, stiff leaves narrow below the center into an awl, not thorny point. At the top, they are striped and roughened by bumps along the longitudinal veins . Their green, somewhat glauke leaf blades are 70 to 120 centimeters (rarely from 35 centimeters) long and 6 to 10 centimeters (rarely from 4 centimeters) wide. The tiny, triangular, pale marginal teeth are arranged irregularly. There are about two peripheral teeth per millimeter.

The upright, pyramidal, downy-haired inflorescence reaches a height of 4 to 5 meters (rarely 2.5 to 8 meters) and is up to 2 meters wide. The 30 to 65 centimeters (rarely up to 100 centimeters) long partial inflorescences carry amply elongated bulbils . The flowers , which stand together in pairs to four, are 40 millimeters long. They stand on 3 to 5 millimeter long flower stalks . Their greenish-white, elliptical to elongated elliptical, hairy on the outside tepals are 18 to 20 millimeters long and 5 to 7 millimeters wide.

The elongated egg-shaped, small-pointed, pointed fruits are 4 to 7 centimeters long and about 3 centimeters wide. They contain seeds 10 to 12 millimeters long and 6 to 8 millimeters wide .

Systematics and distribution

Furcraea bedinghausii is widespread in the Mexican states of Jalisco , Distrito Federal , Hidalgo , Michoacán and México on mountain slopes and mountain peaks at altitudes of 2650 to 3500 meters.

The first description by Karl Heinrich Koch was published in 1863. Furcraea bedinghausii is in the genus in the section Serrulatae classified.

A nomenclature synonym is Furcraea longaeva subsp. bedinghausii (K.Koch) B.Ullrich (1991). Included in the species as a synonym are Furcraea flaccida Hort. Panorm. ex hoard. Kew (no year), Yucca parmentieri Ortgies (1859), Agave argyrophylla hort. ex K. Koch (1862), Agave toneliana Hort. ex E. Morren (1863), Roezlia regia Hort ex. Lem.
